I am a botanical artist, landscape architect, and photographer who creates art that expresses the timeless beauty and passing phenomena of the world around us.
I believe the purpose of design is to
create harmony. During my years as a landscape architect I developed the concept of VOX LOCI,
or the "Voice of the place," in which I sought to understand the underlying structure and harmonics of a site, and the tension between its essential ecology and the requirements for human usage. Then, through drawing, design, and construction I created beautiful places
that evoked the intrinsic qualities of the site, or its "sense" of place.
Now "VOX LOCI" informs my paintings, photographs, and other art. I work in many different media including watercolor, acrylics, ink, gouache, color pencil, graphite, collage, threads and fabric, photography and garden arts. I use these different media to make multiple renderings of the same subject. This enables me to closely observe and better understand what I'm seeing, and to explore which media best captures the essence of the subject, or its VOX LOCI.
My purpose in making art is to fill human experience with images and places that remind us that beauty is real, and harmony has power and is essential in our world.
Therefore, making art is essential work because the presence of beautiful art in our lives truly does feed our hearts and give voice to our souls.
My work has been displayed in open and juried
exhibits. Recently I had a botanical piece in the “Art Speaks” Exhibit at the Center for the Arts, University of South Carolina Beaufort.
My background includes degrees in Studio Art and Landscape Architecture from Smith College and Harvard University. I am currently working toward a Certificate in Botanical Illustration at the New York Botanical Garden. I am also a member of the American Society of
Landscape Architects, the American Society of Botanical Artists, and the Tristate Botanical Artist Circle.
